Beware of Companies Who Can Start Right Away - Quality is Worth Waiting For

When your sink backs up and starts leaking, you know you can’t delay getting it fixed. Maybe you take the day off of work to research some do-it-yourself fixes and go to the home improvement store, or maybe you ask your friends for their recommendations on reliable plumbers. You make a few phone calls and your problem gets fixed in a day or two with minimal difficulty or waiting around. In the meantime, you work around the problem to avoid making it worse, and then the problem is solved and you can move on.

For emergency fixes, that’s perfect and exactly what you need. Reputable heating and cooling, or plumbing companies are proud, and should be, to be available to come to your home for emergency fixes on a short timeframe. That’s the entire premise of their business model. If you had to wait a month for someone to check on your malfunctioning air conditioner during the heat of summer, you wouldn’t just wait. You’d call around and try to find someone who could come out sooner! Any company that isn’t prepared to handle emergency repairs won’t get a lot of phone calls offering jobs.

However, that’s not the same experience you should expect when you’re looking to remodel a room in your home, or take on a bigger project. While you might be more than ready to update your home, large scale projects should never be rushed just because you want the results last week.

We are all bombarded by ads from companies saying they’ll come out next week and quickly get a major home remodel finished in days. The advertising makes it sound like their open schedule is a selling point, instead of a red flag. You want your project finished fast and they say they can do that for you, so you might think about looking them up. When you’re daydreaming about that luxurious new bathroom, you might not be thinking about the implications of that open availability.

A lot of unscrupulous companies make a big push to get clients to sign up to have work done quickly, collect the deposit, and then either never show up, or show up and do shoddy work. We are all familiar with the social media ads that suddenly are all we can see, or the flyers that show up tucked into our front door, or the mailbox. These companies try to get as many people to contract with them as quickly as possible, and then frequently disappear into thin air before the bad reviews can start piling up and ruin their reputations – eliminating any chance of getting any problems they left behind fixed, or any money refunded. We’ve all heard at least one horror story along those lines. No one wants to experience these situations.

You don’t want to take a cup of coffee out onto your brand new deck and feel it wobble underneath you, or worse, have a loose board or nail ruin your morning. Or find a leak spreading across the freshly done bathroom floor when you try out the new shower for the first time. An even worse prospect if the tiles are laid unevenly, and catch your bare toes. In those cases, you’re not much better off than you were before the project was started, and now you might even have some emergency repairs that need to be made before you end up with a big problem. In the worst case, you’ll need to have all of the new work pulled out and totally redone, only now it’s a major repair job as well as a remodel.

To make sure you’re getting the best work possible, look for a company that books several weeks out – it will tell you that they’re taking all the right steps to make sure the job is done correctly, the materials sourced for quality and to specifically fit your needs, and that they’ll still be around in case any issues come up down the line for you. It also means other people are putting their trust in this company, and you can too. Because major home remodels are an act of trust. You’re letting people you don’t know into your home where you live every day and trusting that they can and will do what they say they will. It’s why we ask for recommendations from our loved ones first and foremost, before spending a lot of money on something.

If a company is ready to give you a fresh bathroom in a week, you’re going to be getting cheap parts, cut corners, and other problems you’ll have to deal with later. If they were as skilled as they’ll try to tell you, they’d be booked several weeks out and not available to start tomorrow in the first place. Waiting is never fun, especially when you’re really excited for the project to be finished, but you’ll be happier with it in the long run. And you’re not really waiting to get started – once your remodel is on the calendar, the process is already in motion! We’re just handling the work as it goes forward, placing orders and filing paperwork, making sure we’re ready to go as soon as it’s time to start on your project.

At Third Generation Restoration, we do our best to balance the needs of your schedule, with our already established clients. We will come out and meet with you to go over everything you need and want, and help you pick out the new appliances and design elements for your project, and then we’ll get you on our calendar for the work, with an estimate on how long it should take.
